Loxwood Jazz and Blues Club

World Class Musicians usually the 3rd Tuesday of every month

Simon launched the Loxwood Jazz and Blues Club to raise much needed funds to extend and improve his local village hall. The first night in December 2009 was a sell out and it continues to sell out most months. World class musicians join Simon to provide a variety of highly entertaining evenings. The hall's fundraising committee were delighted and work hard each month to ensure there is a licensed bar with real ale and set the hall up in a relaxed way with candlelit tables to create a fantastic atmosphere. To find out more about the hall refurbishment click here.

Tickets are only £10 each (unless otherwise stated) and available from Anita Bates on 07739 231 467, anita@anitabates.com or from Loxwood Post office and stores. Doors open at 7.30 and the music starts at 8pm. The location is Loxwood Village Hall, Guildford Road, Loxwood, RH14 0SF.

19th September 2017

Pure Brubeck!

Harry The Piano – Piano, Simon Bates - Alto Saxophone, Dominic Howles – Bass, Pete Cater - Drums

Emulating the style of the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet (Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright, Joe Morello) Pure Brubeck draws on their repertoire from the period 1951-1968, covering albums such as the Jazz Goes to College series, Time Out, Time Further Out and Time In. The gig is designed to show the virtuosity of the original members of Brubeck's quartet and Pure Brubeck with a combination of transcription and original improvisation, but always within the style of the original. You won’t hear a more accurate live representation of the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

17th October 2017

The Clarinet Maestros! - Ken Peplowski, Julian Stringle and Simon Bates  Tickets £15

The celebrated American clarinet star Ken Peplowski & Europe’s premier jazz clarinetist and Loxwood Jazz favourite Julian Marc Stringle perform in session with Simon and "Britain’s answer to Oscar Peterson" Craig Milverton on piano. ‘The Clarinet Maestros’ will perform an exciting and refreshing programme of great melodies by both British and American tunesmiths.

Starting his career off playing in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the litany of musicians Ken has collaborated with includes: Mel Torme, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell,  James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, Woody Allen and Marianne Faithfull. In 1984, Benny Goodman came out of retirement and put together a new band, hiring Ken on tenor saxophone. He has recorded more than 50 CDs as a soloist, over 400 as a sideman and has won the Down Beat best clarinetist award several times!

"Mr. Peplowski sounds the way (Benny) Goodman might if he had kept evolving, kept on listening to new music, kept refining his sound, polishing his craft, and expanding his musical purview into the 21st century.” Will Friedwald in The Wall Street Journal, December 2012

"Ken Peplowski is arguably the greatest living jazz clarinetist" Russell Davies, BBC2
