Loxwood Jazz and Blues Club

World Class Musicians usually the 3rd Tuesday of every month

Simon launched the Loxwood Jazz and Blues Club to raise much needed funds to extend and improve his local village hall. The first night in December 2009 was a sell out and it continues to sell out most months. World class musicians join Simon to provide a variety of highly entertaining evenings. The hall's fundraising committee were delighted and work hard each month to ensure there is a licensed bar with real ale and set the hall up in a relaxed way with candlelit tables to create a fantastic atmosphere.

Tickets are only £12 each (unless otherwise stated) and available from Anita Bates on 07739 231 467, or from Loxwood Post office and stores. Doors open at 7.30 and the music starts at 8pm. The location is Loxwood Village Hall, Guildford Road, Loxwood, RH14 0SF.

17th September 2019

Emulating the style of the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet, Pure Brubeck draws on their repertoire from the period 1951-1968, covering albums such as the Jazz Goes to College series, Time Out, Time Further Out and Time In. This reincarnation of the famous band features the incredible Harry the Piano and the sweet alto saxophone of Simon Bates.

You won’t hear a more accurate live representation of probably the all-time best known and best loved jazz outfit ever. Expect faithful re-workings of the classic tunes written by Dave Brubeck and his saxophonist Paul Desmond including Blue Rondo à la Turk, It’s a Raggy Waltz, The Duke and, of course, the biggest selling jazz single of all time Take Five.

15th October

Martin Shaw is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz trumpet players in Europe and first met Simon in 1989 when they were students at the Guildhall School of Music on the post graduate course in jazz and studio music.

An established and highly regarded studio and touring musician, his powerful yet wonderfully fluent playing has been heard with the likes of Sting, Michel Legrand, Jamiroquai, the Brand New Heavies, John Dankworth and Cleo Laine and he is a first call for numerous high profile musicians both in the UK and abroad. A featured soloist with the BBC Big Band, his melodic improvisations and warm, fluid sound are universally admired and respected.

19th November

November wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Loxwood from the top UK musicians that make up the Simon Bates Big Band. Founded specifically for this club back in 2013 after requests from many of our regular audience members, Simon’s Big Band and its ever expanding repertoire has been a regular feature in the Loxwood Jazz calendar ever since.

Expect a mix of the classic big bands of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich and Gordon Goodwin with some new arrangements and rarely performed music from British composers and arrangers. As ever, the all-star line-up comprises the best of British Jazz musicians including Loxwood favourites Chris Dean, Sid Gauld and Harry Greene.

17th December

For our very special 10th anniversary party, there really was only one choice. Loxwood favourite Simply Swing! The Simply Swing Band has been at the heart of the London entertainment scene

for over 20 years. Playful and dramatic, cool and current, Simply Swing will take you on a musical journey with class, humour and virtuosity. The band’s collective biographies read like a who’s who of 20th century music and include Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Kylie, the BBC Big Band, Tina Turner, George Benson, Alexander Armstrong, Cleo Laine, Shakatak and Humphrey Littleton. As an added bonus, for our 10th birthday, we’ll be featuring the vocals of Jacqui Hicks.

And as it’s Christmas, included in the ticket price are mulled wine and mince pies. Our 10th anniversary party is the best way to kick start your Christmas celebrations – a great time is guaranteed!

He has also worked with many giants of the music world including Barney Kessel, Didier Lockwood, Nils Pedersen, Gordon Beck, Herb Ellis, Mundell Lowe, Miroslav Vitous, Birelli Lagrene, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Pat Metheny, Andy Summers, Nigel Kennedy, John Williams and the Zappatistas.

24th March 2020

Danish singer Sara Oschlag has made a name for herself performing in a variety of settings for the last 15 years - an effort which has seen her earn over one million views on YouTube. A stalwart of the vibrant Brighton Jazz scene, Sara has worked throughout Europe leading her own bands, as well as for a fair few celebrities including Sir Paul McCartney & Zoe Ball.

She has been hailed a ‘musician’s singer’ due to her wonderful way of using dynamics, texture & rhythm. An intelligent interpreter of songs in the jazz tradition, her influences include Anita O’Day, Shirley Horn & Nancy Wilson. Sara’s honest stage presence, expressive voice and effortless sense of swing have made her a firm favourite with musicians and the public alike.

Joining Sara and Simon Bates will be international bass star Dan Sheppard. Dan works regularly at Ronnie Scott's and with many artists including Little Jimmy Scott, Bobby Wellins, Jim Mullen and Alan Barnes.
